Dr. James Jung’s journey to becoming a psychiatrist and therapist has been unconventional, to say the least. Prior to attending medical school at the University of New Mexico and completing a Psychiatry Residency at the University of California Davis Health, Dr. Jung served in the United States Army as an infantry officer, spending most of the service deployed overseas. While it was difficult to envision at the time how this would lead to a career in mental health, this experience became the most influential and important factor in guiding Dr. Jung’s approach to mental health. The vivid memory of hesitation to seek support from the VA due to fear of the unknown and concerns about what treatment might imply was a significant turning point. It took two years to take that first step and ask for help, but it connected Dr. Jung to a therapist for the first time, offering relief and the understanding of what it could be like to sit with someone who provided a non-judgmental space and helped make sense of personal experiences. Many years and several degrees later, Dr. Jung is here today.
Dr. Jung’s background forms the bedrock of their approach to working with clients, which is simple: to meet individuals where they are. Whether someone has spent years before seeking help or is coming in for the first time, everyone is welcome. Dr. Jung values collaboration, shared decision-making, and identifying areas to further support clients’ goals. Believing that the time spent in the clinic or over telehealth is just part of the treatment to reduce suffering, find balance, and improve quality of life, Dr. Jung works to incorporate different treatments that occur outside of the clinic to build a comprehensive treatment plan.
